Why do I not get the same result with version X (OLD) compared to version Y (NEW)?

The SPEED software is always under an ongoing development process to get the best out of it. Unfortunately, sometimes it is necessary to change existing parameters and behavior to redefine them.

Is SPEED capable of dealing with generators?

Yes of course. All the main programs are able to calculate beside the motor performance the corresponding generator performance data. Some programs even provide special topologies (wound field rotor in PC-BDC, doubly fed in PC-IMD) and features (short circuit calculation, equivalent circuit parameters) for generators.

What do I need to do if the help line has disappeared?

This seems to be a Windows 7 related problem. Please go to “Options”, uncheck “Information Line” and recheck it. Now the help line is visible again.

There are so many parameters in the Template Editor available. What is a good starting point for those?

Please see in each reference manual the chapter 3.6 Recommended settings. This is a good starting point. It may also be useful to use custom template editors to show a limited number of relevant parameters. Please see the WinSPEED manual for more information.

How can I get a file of the data displayed in SPEED graphs?

There are three ways of doing this:
The first is to use the clipboard (Graph|Copy to clipboard, Ctrl+C) and then paste into Excel or Notepad. You may need to use Paste Special to select the text data rather than the image of the graph which is also copied to the clipboard.
The second way is to use the menu item Graph|Save graph data which can save in a variety of formats including plain text or for use with MATLAB.
The third is to use the Graph|Edit graph menu item and then use the Data or Export options to save in various formats including html and for Excel.


Why I am not able to run SPEED with a FlexLM license?

Do you have the latest 2012 release downloaded from Versions of SPEED prior to 2012 do not support the FlexLM licensing system ‑ they use Sentinel dongles instead.
Did you install the FlexLM license manager correctly? A FlexLM installation guide can be downloaded from the support website (as above).

In your license file, please check that the hostname is correctly spelled or that it is your hostname in the license file.
If you get a Flexnet error (-97,121) when starting a SPEED program, this is usually caused by the vendor daemon not being started.  To fix it open a web-browser and navigate to localhost:8080, click the “Administration” link (towards the top right of the page), log-on (the default user-name and password are both “admin”), select “Vendor Daemon Configuration” on the list of tabs down the left hand-side, click the “Administer” link and finally click the “Start” button. The web-browser can then be closed and the SPEED program should run. For more information please see the installation notes available on the download web-site (as above).

What changes are there if I move from a single seat dongle license to a new floating seat FlexLM licensing system?

Once the FlexLM licensing system has been set up, there should be no difference in the program behavior (starting procedure, usage, …). The good thing is that it does give you more flexibility. You do not need to have a dongle connected physically to your PC (desktop or laptop) anymore.


I am not able to get a mesh in PC-FEA. What should I do?

Most meshing errors arise from a poor initial distribution of nodes at the sub-domain boundaries or from an invalid geometry. For the first case, the solution is to use the GDF Editor to change the numbers of points or their distribution in the geometry so that adjoining edges have similar node densities. An alternative is to adjust the MaxAngle parameter in the GoFER dialog or in the .FEA script, to 130 (or higher) rather than the default of 120 as this enables the mesher to accommodate less optimal boundary node distributions ‑ although at the cost of lower mesh quality. For the second case, you must use the outline editor or the GDF Editor to check for intersecting lines e.g. in an IPM if the magnet block extends beyond the magnet slot. Once found you need to use the outline editor to correct the geometry and try again.
